Aqualyx patient information

What is Aqualyx?

Aqualyx is an injectable fat dissolving solution that eliminates small pockets of fat from areas such as the legs, hips, arms, tummy and chin.  It causes dissolution of fat cells, after which the body then expels the released fatty acids naturally.

During treatment, Aqualyx is injected directly in to the subcutaneous tissue using very thin, sharp cannulas (like needles).  Within the following weeks the treated fat cells gradually dissolve.

Is the treatment suitable for everyone?

Aqualyx is intended for patients with localised adipose tissue not responding to diet or increased physical exercise.  The treatment is not intended for weight loss, it is used to improve and alter the contour of the body.  It is not for use when large amounts of fat are required to be removed.  Pregnant or lactating women and those with severe systemic illnesses and some autoimmune conditions are not suitable for treatment.

Are there any side effects or risks to the treatment?

Expected adverse effects include swelling and redness of the area.  There may also be moderate pain and itching, pressure sensitivity and haematoma formation.

Possible but very rare adverse effects include dizziness, allergic reaction, permanent redness of the skin, hyperpigmentation, lumps or dents in the treated area and permanent damage of nerve tissue as well as inflammatory reactions and infections that may result in irreversible scarring. Although, to date there have been no recorded cases of permanent redness or hyperpigmentation.

How many treatments do I need and how long does it last?

You are likely to require 2-6 treatments 3-4 weeks apart to achieve the desired effect.  The results of Aqualyx are permanent, however you must adhere to a healthy diet following treatment to ensure the success of the treatment.

Is there any down time after treatment?

After treatment you should not apply any cosmetics to the area for 12 hours and avoid direct sources of heat or radiation (sunlight, UV-radiation, sauna, etc).  You should also abstain from demanding physical exercise for 7 days after treatment.  The broken down fat is converted into additional energy so you must adhere to a strict healthy diet, otherwise your body will simply store the fat in an alternative fat deposit.
